Illustrated floweredendpages with stressing at hinges Book is in wonderful condition elsewise - illustrated frontis with tissue intact, by subscription from the Home Maker Magazine. Pages are a wonderful creamy white and in great condition.

Bumps and rubs at the cover corners and bottom edges - cloth at spine head and heel worn - slight lean. Name and date with fountain pen on first blank end page.

Warner - 1874, by subscription only, American Publishing Company, Hartford, "Fully illustrated from new designs by Hoppin, Sytephens, Williams, White etc. Second front fly page has two rows of Japanese characters. 574 pages plus appendix. With date of 1873 on Copyright Page and 1874 on Title Page [AS CALLED FOR]. With date of 1873 on Copyright Page and 1874 on Title Page [AS CALLED FOR]. THE GILDED AGE appeared at the end of 1873. Some copies carry an 1873 date, but most are dated 1874. Copies with the earliest states of the text are found with both 1873 and 1874 title-pages. ; B&W Illustrations; 8vo; 574 pages; Twain's first novel. Even Long Fold-out Illustration is NEAR MINT! This one has none of the 10 points that caracterize the first edition - thus likely a second or later printing. Definitely very early. Full leather bound - firsts are clothbound with raised panel ridges on the spine with gilt stamped titles on black background - some moderate run at corners - front gutter cracked - spine leather chipped along gutter - most pages nice and white - some light flocking near the back blank endpages - front and back endpages are a salmon color.
