Most have he date and letter "D" on the upper gith corner in pencil.

All of the sheet music we sell is always ALL ORIGINAL and never reproduced or photocopied!

Offered here is a vintage antique 19th century piece of sheet music; "Darling Nelly Gray", Anti-Slave Song published by Geo. Willig, Baltimore, 1835. Sheet is from a previously bound volume - thus chips and roughness along the spine - covers separated. All music is shipped in plastic, between stiff cardboard and with delivery confirmation.

There's a low green valley by the old Kentucky shore,
There I've whiled many happy hours away,
A sitting and a singing by the little cottage door
Where lived my darling Nelly Gray.

CHORUS.
Oh! my poor Nelly Gray, they have taken you away
And I'll never see my darling any more,
I'm sitting by the river and I'm weeping all the day,
For you've gone from the old Kentucky shore.

    2.
When the moon had climbed the mountain and the stars were shining too,
Then I'd take my darling Nelly Gray,
And we'd float down the river in my little red canoe,
Whily my banjo sweetly I would play.

   3.
One night I went to see her but "she's gone!" the neighbors say,
The white man bound her with his chain,
They have taken her to Georgia for to wear her life away,
As she toils in the cotton and the cane.
              Chorus.

   4.
My canoe is under water and my banjo is unstrung,
I'm tired of living any more,
My eyes shall look downward and my songs shall be unsung
While I stay on the old Kentucky shore.
              Chorus.

   5.
My eyes are getting blinded and I cannot see my way,
Hark! there's somebody knocking at the door --
Oh! I hear the angels calling and I see my Nelly Gray
Farewell to the old Kentucky shore.

   Chorus, to the last verse.
Oh! my darling Nelly Gray, up in heaven there they say,
That they'll never take you from me any more,
I'm a-coming -- coming -- coming, as the angels clear the way
Farewell to the old Kentucky shore.

Darling Nelly Gray was written by Benjamin R. Hanby in 1856. His father was an Ohio minister with strong abolitionist sympathies. His home was a station on the "Underground Railroad." The tune was based on the story of a slave who was sold away from her home and family. The tune was very popular in the North before and during the Civil War.

It is said that the tune was inspired by a runaway slave named Joseph Selby who stopped at the Hanby home on the way to Canada. Selby hoped to earn sufficient money in Canada to buy the freedom of his sweetheart, a slave named Nelly Gray. One version of the story says that Nelly was traded to a Georgia slaveholder on the day before she and Selby were to be married.

I'se Her Black-an'-Tan Adonis, K. M. Gilham, Supplement to the San Francisco Examiner, ca. 1898

All of the sheet music that we sell is always ALL ORIGINAL and never reproduced or photocpied!

Offered here is a wonderful large format Newspaper Supplement Black Smericana sheet: "I'se Her Black-an'-Tan Adonis", "As Sung by Querita Vincent - with her photo on the cover", words and music by K. M. Gilham, Musical Supplement to the San Francisco Examiner, ca. 1898.  You collectors know how tough these are to find in decent condition.  They were done on newspaper stock.  This came from a bound volume - thus tiny chips along the spine, which is separated - some very minor bug damage at the top left corner - one small elongated hole at the bottom right corner too - no big deal.  It is a very scarce sheet and typical of the so-called "Coon Songs" of the period.
