Offered here is a wonderful anquitarian Victorian Era book: "Arthur's Home Magazine, January-December, 1854, Bound vol. - complete, S. Arthur & Co., Philadelphia, 1854, 462 pp. There is NO Vol.# listed inside - in light this my search shows the magazine was published from October 1852-1898, thus this is likley the 2nd year. Dark red leather bound with ornately embossed cover design and name: Mary E. Lane in gilt - Magazine title on spine is mostly worn off. The extremities are worn Brown endpages, front hinge is very loose - several pages are loose inside and many have flocking. Seems complete but not guaranteed. Loaded with numerous engravings - each month has more than one wonderful engraved frontis. This is loaded with numerous fashion plates and engravings etc. Really loaded with great lithos!!

Seeking greater opportunity, Ellen moved to Brooklyn and met her husband, owner of Mme. Demorest's Emporium of Fashions, an enterprise begun with his first wife. Together, they expanded their business to a national market by launching a series of successful women's fashion magazines with tissue paper patterns in each issue. The first to do so. This has all of the typical items of interest to home makers, srials, stories, some fashion, fancy work - on bags - with numerous illustrations, knitting, some adds too, lots of Thanksgiving articles - one on the Puritans in Old New England. Some dirtiness across the centerfold.

Its serialized stories focussed heavily on romance (domestic and historical) and its illustrations included many images of women. Format: 8 pages, with a front-page illustration (sometimes signed by the artist and/or engraver) and additional images inside each issue. This issue : Seard W. Hopkins (Two gentlemen of Hawaii), Hall Caine (The Manxman - continued), E. Werner (A memory), F. I. Kimball (Viva La Reine), Mrs. Kate Vaugh (Yet She Loved Him), etc. This issue has great adds on the back cover bicycles etc!
